Lacey Act Declaration (LAD)
Lacey Act Declaration (LAD) – A conservation law in the United States that prohibits trade in wildlife, fish, and plants that have been illegally taken, possessed, transported, or sold. The declaration or certificate confirms the commodities have not been illegally taken. For plants, the Lacey Act requires an import declaration that includes the scientific name of any plant, a description of the value, quantity, and the name of the country from where the plant was taken. If a plant species or country of origin cannot be determined, the plant declaration must include a list of possible plant species found in the product or a list of possible countries from which the plant originated. For fish and wildlife, the Act mandates stringent regulations to ensure compliance with federal, state, tribal, or foreign laws. For example, import declarations for fish must include details such as species identification, quantity, and the country of origin. Similarly, declarations for wildlife products must specify the species involved, their origin, and compliance with all applicable laws to prevent trafficking and ensure conservation efforts are upheld.
