India boasts extensive maritime trade infrastructure, dominating the central-northern segment of the Indian Ocean with its 7,500 km coastline and 14,500 km of navigable waterways. Currently comprising a network of 13 major seaports, this infrastructure serves as a key focal point for India’s investment in enhancing its coastal regions for economic and social prosperity.

To leverage its strategic location between the crucial waterways of the Suez Canal and the Malacca Strait, India has initiated the Sagarmala project. The aim is to position itself as a maritime connection hub for trade among markets in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The growth of India’s ports is evident, with a combined handling of 1.3 billion metric tons of cargo in 2022 and a remarkable 102% growth in container throughput from 2011 to 2021.
